Triumph for Berkshire Pig Breed in Pig of the Year Final
Many congratulations to Chris Impey for defeating 43 other pigs to
secure the Pig of the Year title in the Final at the Great Yorkshire
show judged by John Davy.
Chris's gilt Fairoaks Farewell 16 had qualified at the Bath and
West show, and was one of five Berkshires to make the 2008 Final. It was
great to see so many food Berkshires in the Final. Congratulations to
all the breeders who qualified this year: Mark Horsley (Horbeck
Ambassador 62, Paul and Sue Ashcroft (Barlings Stonebow 122),
Ron Fieldhouse (Calcaria Royal Sapphire) and Andrew Wright, North
Sea Camp (Hawthorns Lassetter 719).
Berkshires in Scotland
Dennis and Linda Johnstone have very successfully flown the flag for
Berkshire breed with an impressive demonstration at the Turriff show.
Thank you to Dennis for all the information on this very successful
operation which saw Berkshire pigs introduced to a whole new audience.
Shows
Judges reports from Chris Coe and Jo Wykes-Sneyd, and some show
results appear in this issue and I am grateful to Sue Fildes for chasing
up much of this information while she is recovering from a recent hip
replacement operation. Any missing results will be included in the next
newsletter.
Ring Stewards
Any of us who show or judge know only too well how vital the
contribution of an able and efficient Ring Steward is to the smooth
running of the classes. I would like to thank Frank Miller, secretary of
the British
Lop Society (click here for more details), himself a very
experienced Ring Steward, for his extremely informative article on the
subject.
I would also welcome hearing from any members who might be interested in
Ring Stewarding at the Royal Show in 2009 - my contact details are
below.
