Surveyor’s Report – Berkshire Bloodline Survey 07 The results of the above survey of the Berkshire
breed are very encouraging with a 50% increase in the number of
registered boars since 2004. Over the same period the number of
females has nearly doubled, with the larger proportion of these
females being sows that have had birth notified progeny. The
distribution of the various male and female bloodlines within
the breed is also satisfactory. Birth notifications and herd
book registrations rose markedly in 2005 and have been
maintained in 2006 and 2007. The number of pedigree Berkshire
breeders in the survey has also increased from 153 in 2004 to
182 now. Many of the current breeders came into the breed in the
past three years and I very much hope that their enthusiasm and
support for Berkshires can be maintained throughout these
difficult times.
